Japanese company Makita is now over 100 years old which means they were there at the very beginning of electric motors.
They are an interesting company, debt free like JCB, they finance everything out of sales. They have come a long way since they were formed but enough of the history, the question is ‘How have they managed to become the No1 U.K seller in cordless drills?’ It isn’t like they don’t have any competition.
In a word ‘engineering’. It is all well made kit but they are not perfect, they have blind spots. It took them years, and several attempts, to come up with a decent stand for their mitre saw and it held their sales back while the likes of DeWalt cleaned up. They also have a tendency to dilute their brand by selling bumper cases of cheap Chinese accessories which are not worthy of their brand.
Where they do score over the competition is in servicing and after-sales. They also tend to have a ‘good attitude’ towards warranty claims and will often give customers the benefit of the doubt in cases of wear and tear. This has helped Makita power tools build a loyal customer base. We get loads of positive comments on our Youtube test videos.
We have visited Makita’s factory in Telford and witnessed the quality control in their engineering. It costs a little more to put every armature onto a lathe and balance it but it produces a smoother running motor, less wobble = less wear and it feels oh so good in the hand. You know you are using quality kit. Could you tell with your eyes closed that you are using a Makita drill? We will try that test.
