Could this be the portable air conditioning unit that actually makes sense?
This room gets unbearably hot in summer. With bi-fold doors, lots of glass and a roof lantern, it can feel more like a greenhouse than a comfortable living space. So we put the Midea PortaSplit through its paces to see whether a portable split air conditioner can genuinely cool a difficult room without the usual drawbacks of a conventional portable AC unit.
The Midea PortaSplit is a portable split air conditioner and heat pump, with the compressor outside and the indoor unit inside. That means you get the benefits of a split system, but without drilling through the wall, permanent pipework or calling in an F-gas engineer.
Roger looks at how easy it is to set up, how the window and door sealing kit works, how loud it is in use, and whether it can cope with a large glass-heavy room on a hot day.
It offers dehumidifying, fan-only, cooling and heat pump modes, making it more than just a summer-only appliance. For bedrooms, loft rooms, garden rooms, home offices and rented properties, this kind of portable heat pump could be a useful alternative to a fully installed air conditioning system.
As always, we want to know what you think. Would you use a portable split air conditioner like this, or would you rather install a fixed AC system?
