When decorative stonework fails, replacing the entire canopy is not always the only option.

Roger tackles a badly damaged reconstituted stone canopy using helical reinforcement, shuttering and a sand-and-cement repair mix.

The damage appears to be widespread along the street, possibly caused by water penetration and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

But can a site-made repair ever blend convincingly with the original moulding?

Let us know how you would have approached it.

Key insights

• Water penetration and frost may have caused the canopy to fail.

• Similar damage along the road suggests a recurring design or material problem.

• Clean and dampen the existing surface before applying the repair.

• Helical ties help reinforce the new section and support the projecting edge.

• SBR improves adhesion and helps waterproof the repair mix.

• Oiling the shuttering makes it easier to remove.

• Compacting and vibrating the mortar helps remove trapped air.

• A shaped running mould would produce a more accurate decorative profile.

• Small imperfections should become less noticeable as the repair weathers.
