3 Common Household Issues During the Winter Season

0

Now the winter season is fast approaching, homeowners are likely to face some issues.

From mould growth to boiler breakdowns, this time of year is, unfortunately, one where homes are prone to problems.

Today, we will be discussing three common household issues that you may face during the wintertime and how you can solve them.

Burst Pipe

The most common cause of burst pipes is cold weather. If the pipes in your home are exposed to freezing temperatures, then they have a greater risk of bursting during the winter months.

This is because the water in the pipes starts to freeze and expand during the colder months. The expansion causes a great amount of pressure thus bursting the pipe.

Through some online research, you will be able to find plenty of blogs and articles which give you advice on how to prevent burst pipes.

A burst pipe can be costly so you want to do everything you can to prepare for the winter and avoid it.

Gas Boiler Ban

Boiler Breakdowns

Boiler breakdowns are a common problem during the winter and leave many homeowners without heat and hot water.

Of course, this is not ideal during the colder months. Boiler breakdowns can happen for several reasons. Some include loss of pressure, a faulty pipe or that your boiler is too old.

Many homeowners can overlook the age of their boiler and after a few years, they become less energy efficient.

As a result, they can break down and they can also cause your energy bills to increase.

If your boiler is old, then you may need to consider looking into a boiler replacement. Bbright are a company who can help you with exactly that.

As well as being able to pick a new boiler from the comfort of your own home, they can also give you some expert advice on when your boiler might need replacing if you are unsure.

It is always best to seek advice from professionals so you can take the right course of action.

Mould Growth

Mould can grow in homes all year round but during the wet, winter months is when it can thrive the most. If your home is poorly ventilated, it can cause walls to become damp from condensation.

In these conditions, mould will thrive and start to grow at a more rapid rate. However, there are some simple ways that you avoid this happening in your home.

Even getting into the habit of opening windows more regularly can help.

There are plenty of top tips out there which can help you prevent mould growth. Some solutions may work better in some households than others, but it is important to try them all out until you find one that works best for you.

When mould starts to grow in your home, it can spark feelings of worry. However, the important thing to remember is there are many ways that it can be treated and prevented.

So, try not to get too disheartened. It is always recommended that you seek the advice of a professional if your mould growth begins to get out of hand.

Bradfords Building Supplies Talks Sustainability At National Self Build & Renovation Show

0

Bradfords Building Supplies will be sharing advice on how to improve the environmental sustainability of self-build projects at the National Self Build & Renovation Show.

Running at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon on 15 and 16 October, the show shares inspiration and best practices with the self-build community.

This month’s event will include a discussion led by Giles Bradford, Head of Sustainability at Bradfords, together with Shane Oxberry, Managing Director at Renewable Equipment Solutions, on how to approach building sustainability from source to fit.

The session, ‘Sustainable Building – The Whole Story’, will take place on both days at 11:30am and will focus on the importance of understanding the whole picture when considering and making decisions about which materials, methods and products to use in a build.

Bradfords NSBRS (2)

“The UK’s growing community of self-builders lead the way regarding consideration of environmental sustainability in house building projects, but understandably the focus is often around the impact the completed project will have in use,” explains Giles.

“We need to help people to understand the ‘upstream’ impact, as well as making sure that at early planning stages low carbon and energy-efficient measures are planned correctly and with a whole-house approach in mind.

For example, a product might have great energy efficiency once installed, but when you look further up the supply chain, you find that the manufacturing process is not so sustainable, offsetting the in use benefit and making the whole-life environmental impact more significant than might be seen if simply looking at face value.

“We hope that our tips on what to think about when purchasing products and materials will help empower self-builders to make the best choices for the environment without compromising on quality.”

Bradfords Building Supplies has a permanent stand at The National Self Build & Renovation Centre, which is located at Lydiard Fields, Great Western Way, Swindon, SN5 8UB.

All You Need To Know About Survivalist Bunkers

0

Interest in survivalist bunkers has risen by 2,000% since the pandemic struck, according to The Sun.

Vivos, a bunker supplier, who refer to themselves as ‘the Largest Survival Community On Earth!’ say that at least 1,000 of their members are from the UK.

So just how is a survivalist bunker better than hiding away in your own home and how do you go about building one?

Understanding a survivalist bunker

A survivalist bunker is an underground shelter that caters to all of an individual’s needs during a catastrophic event, such as covid.

Vivos claim that their bunkers are habitable for around a year as they provide fresh water, purified air, and fresh food.

The idea is that once you move into the bunker, you don’t leave until the major event is over.

Bunkers therefore typically come with living areas, food prep areas, wash facilities, gymnasiums, surgical areas, bars, pools, and so much more.

Building a bunker

When it comes to building a survivalist bunker you have two options; the DIY route or a ready-made bunker.

A ready-made bunker gives you a good shell to work with and you can still use your building skills to enhance your shelter.

You could erect walls inside the bunker to create individual rooms or zones, build cupboards, install storage, or make a games room.

Fitting plumbing, electrics, and lighting are a must too. If you’d rather start completely from scratch, you’ll need a good plan to work from.

Concrete, bricks, and blocks will form the foundations of your bunker. Most importantly, your air filtration system needs to be carefully planned out and vents must be installed.

Surviving in a bunker

Anything can happen while you’re locked away in your bunker, so you need to ensure you’re prepared for life away from humanity.

For example, you’ll need to know how to administer basic first aid, in case you or one of your loved ones get injured or sick.

You’ll also need to hook up to a water supply, such as a water tank or connect to a nearby well. But you must ensure that the water is purified and safe to drink.

The simplest way to do this in your bunker is to boil the water to kill off harmful germs.

heather mckean 1I9bMlIAIBM unsplash

Don’t forget the importance of storing enough non-perishable food items away either.

Canned goods and dehydrated food items are ideal when you don’t know how long you’ll be locked away.

Alternative options

Not sure that a bunker is for you? One alternative is a bermed home which is also known as an earth home.

These are typically built half underground and half above ground. They are more energy-efficient than a standard bunker as the earth acts as an insulator, while the front of the house is built south facing for light and heat purposes.

A simpler and more DIY-friendly option is a bunker made from corrugated pipe which you can build a sleeping, living, washing, and dining area in.

It’s impossible to predict when the next global disaster will strike. But the one thing you can do to prepare is build a solid, reliable, and enjoyable bunker to hide away in.

Putting The Spotlight On Sustainability

0

With the construction sector set to play a big role in reaching the Government’s net-zero targets, changes are coming in the way we approach housebuilding in the UK. Giles Bradford, Head of Sustainability at Bradfords Building Supplies, looks at why the company is championing environmental responsibility in the industry and gives an insight into its own sustainability journey …

Giles Bradford
Giles Bradford

The Government’s target of bringing all greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050 might still seem a long way off, but in the wake of the COP 26 Global Climate Conference being hosted in the UK next month, we can expect to see tighter regulations around homes’ energy efficiency and the use of materials, products and methods of construction for housebuilding and renovation in the more immediate future.

As a family business that has served the South West’s builders for more than 250 years, we know our responsibility now is to support our customers – from housing developers to self-builders and home renovators – in getting ready for these latest challenges. We need to help them understand the context, to make more environmentally responsible choices, and to make sure they meet new guidelines on sustainability and energy efficiency.

And it’s not just about meeting regulations. Everybody needs be looking beyond the stick that might be wielded to ensure action is taken to instead focus on the opportunity this presents.  We are all responsible for doing our part to address climate change and the impact will be that much more effective if everyone does their bit.

A daunting task

At this stage, many of our customers are unaware of, or indeed intimidated by, the scale of the challenge we’re facing and we’re stepping up to help educate and inform the sector on what needs to be done, and how that can be achieved.  What materials are out there and why they should be used?   We know our customers need help in identifying which products offer the most sustainable solution without compromising on quality.  Some of these are traditional products, whilst others are new.

This means we have to keep on top of the latest sustainable solutions to hit the market, while continuing to challenge our suppliers on the environmental impact of their products and ways in which this could be reduced. For example, we can offer to help consolidate loads and reduce mileage and to return packaging, whilst also being robust in how we source.

Hand in hand with this is the ongoing task of educating our own team on these solutions and their applications so that everyone at every level of the business is able to support our customers in making sustainable choices.

Working together

A big part of our role as a champion of sustainability in the construction sector is to encourage other merchants to get on board. By sharing our own knowledge and lessons we’re learning along the way, we can help them to help their own customers in making these changes.

At a higher level, we need to be a voice for the sector, representing merchants, our customers and communities when it comes to environmental responsibility – ensuring that when decisions are made by the Government, our collective opinions and issues have been considered.

Internally, we’re constantly looking for innovative ways to improve our own environmental responsibility as a business.

As a Business Champion for CO2structZERO, the construction industry’s zero-carbon change programme, we have committed to a framework with real targets around carbon reduction.

We’ve set ourselves the target of reducing our own carbon footprint from 2019 levels year on year. While we’d have liked to have achieved more, in 2020 we achieved over 15% reduction. However, to support the UK climate change agenda we know that’s just the start.

We propose to continue to follow this trajectory to hit at least a 68% reduction but 2030. To do this we are looking at areas such as where our energy is sourced, the use of electric vehicles, recycling of packaging, and how we can divert more of our waste from landfill.

Education is key

While we’re working on our own carbon reduction strategies, this must not divert from our efforts to support the construction community on this journey. We’re currently delivering the first phase of an education and engagement programme that gives us and our suppliers the platform to help our customers embrace sustainability requirements. This includes what we hope will become the first in a series of events that aim to inform and inspire customers, leaving them feeling more confident about what lies ahead as well as where to start.

Ultimately, our customers will have to significantly adjust the way they approach both new build projects and retrofitting homes and we hope that if we can come together as an industry, we can rise to the challenge and share our knowledge and experience to help make the shift towards sustainable housebuilding as smooth as we can.

How to Test for Mould in Your Home

0

61% of UK renters report to have suffered leaking roofs, dampness and mould. Mould is a common problem in many homes. The difficult part about mould is that it can grow without being noticed for months or years, making it hard to identify the source of the problem.

Mould can cause a huge range of health problems, from skin irritation to asthma and allergic reactions. If you have any suspicion that there may be mould in your home, this article will provide seven expert tips on testing for and removing mould from your home.

Check for Damp Patches or Discoloration on Walls or Ceilings

Checking for damp patches or discolouration on walls and ceilings is the first step to identifying whether there may be a mould problem in your home. Any areas that are water damaged, even if they have been dried up, should be tested further. Damp spots can easily lead to black mould growth, which you want to avoid at all costs.

Damp spots or discolouration can be hard to spot, which is why you should try using black light. With the help of this simple device, any areas that are water damaged will glow in the dark and reveal themselves easily for further inspection. Once you notice any mould, you should enlist the help of a professional to get rid of the mould. If left, they can lead to serious health problems.

Check for Musty Smells

Another indicator that there may be a problem with mould in your home is the presence of musty smells. This smell can be difficult to describe, but you will know it if you encounter it. If an area has had water damage or exposure to high humidity for extended periods, this could result in mould growth behind walls and ceilings.

This is why further inspection into these areas may be required to ensure that the problem has been solved and eliminated from your home.

You can do some simple tests yourself at home to determine whether there might be a mould issue on your property, such as placing a bowl of vinegar on a shelf for 24 hours before checking it for any mould growth.

If there is mould, it will have a potent vinegar smell which can be an indicator that there might be a problem with mould in the home.

Check for Plumbing Leaks

A common problem that can lead to mould in your property is plumbing leaks. These problems are difficult to find and may not be spotted until the damage has been done, making them a potential cause of mould growth.

Plumbing leaks can quickly become a major expense if left unchecked for too long because they will only worsen with time.

There are many ways that you can test your home for mould. If there is any suspicion, even the slightest feeling of dampness or musty smells coming from a room, it’s important to investigate this as soon as possible.

The longer you leave the problem before attempting to find and kill off those black spots on your walls or ceilings, the more serious health problems may start to develop.

Innovative Ways To Conserve Water At Home And At Work

0

As of 2021, the world has already used almost 3 trillion tons of freshwater. Unquestionably, the data is a clear sign that everyone should start being water conscious. However, aside from minimizing the frequency of using the sink, there are also other ways to help preserve this natural resource. Below, the following sections will briefly discuss various innovative ways to conserve water at home and work.

Build a rain harvesting system

In a house, collecting rain would help a family minimize the frequency of using the sink or water outlet and have quick access to water outside. While there are rain collection systems available for purchase, one can easily make a simple version using an existing downspout or anything that can guide the water drops from the roof to a collection barrel. After that, an individual can then use the collected rain to spray plants, wash the driveway and car, or for something else.

Opt for a less water-consuming garden

Since plants need water to survive, most water-saving methods do not apply to gardens. However, choosing some plants over others would help. As such, species like orchids, succulents, and clovers are not water-demanding, so it’s fine to sprinkle lesser volumes. Otherwise, one can improve the irrigation to reduce water usage thanks to direct flow in roots and less evaporation.

Bring a bottle of water to work

As you may already know, staying hydrated throughout the day is important, but what’s equally as important is the quality of the water you’re drinking. Aside from convenience, bringing a bottle of water to work helps prevent one from drinking out of unsafe sources. While some drinking fountains and faucets likely received sterilizations, most still are left uncleaned, especially public ones. Accordingly, carrying a personal water tumbler is like having a total home water supply safety guarantee anywhere. Besides, buying bottled water from stores is bad for the environment.

Store water on bottles in the fridge

When fetching directly from the sink, the water often comes out warm, especially in hot seasons. However, most people run the tap for extended periods to wait for the water to cool down, causing more liquid waste. Instead of doing this, why not keep water in bottles in the fridge to have a better drinking experience, reduce water waste, and eliminate the need to wait to quench the thirst.

Avoid throwing tissues in the toilet

In any public place, people might get very conscious about using the bathroom, especially in the workplace. Since all employees know each other, cleaning everything and leaving no traces after using the washroom is almost a given. However, this can also mean individuals throwing used tissues directly into the toilet, making it harder to flush and consuming more water in the process. Therefore, to avoid this, it’s best to trash tissues or wipes into bins or designated places to conserve water and maintain environmental hygiene.

Educate co-workers or employees

Employees can advise and educate co-workers about the importance of conserving water. Also, informing each other every time helps whenever someone forgets to close the sink or is wasting significant volumes. On the other hand, an employer or boss can place signs and notices in the kitchen, bathroom, or other water sources in the company establishment to constantly remind the staff to use water wisely.

Conserve Water At Home And Work

Water constitutes most of the world and the human body, so it’s important to manage this natural resource wisely. Aside from minimizing using the sink or other outlets, the above tips are also effective in conserving water. Above all, raising awareness about the importance of water consciousness can help create a more eco-caring generation. After all, the people on earth are still the ones to benefit from doing such good practices.

JCB. A Great British Success Story

0

Roger takes a break from ranting and raving to celebrate one of Britain’s biggest building industry success stories.

A word from Lord Bamford – JCB Chairman

The story of JCB is one of innovation, ambition and sheer hard work. From small beginnings building agricultural tipping trailers in 1945, to the global force in manufacturing the company has become today, JCB has constantly pushed the boundaries in our desire to be the best. My father and company founder Joseph Cyril Bamford’s motto was, “Jamais content”, and that is exactly right – we are never content with our achievements. But I believe that even he would be amazed by what the company has become. Today, we have 22 plants on four continents and more than 750 dealers around the world.

These are exciting times. In just 75 years we have gone from one man in a garage in Uttoxeter to a major global brand renowned for its pioneering spirit. All of this is down to our people – an 11,000-strong worldwide force that makes up the JCB family we are so proud of. Our achievements over the past 75 years have been considerable, but at JCB we believe in always looking ahead to the next development, the next level of success.

As we speak, JCB is continuing to innovate and push the boundaries in research and development; in particular within the area of sustainability, where energy costs and emissions are becoming an increasingly important purchasing consideration. Many of our customers will need to reinvent their businesses to meet new building standards and emissions legislation, and we will be there to support them every step of the way, as we have always been.
