In 2020, the UK shower equipment market was impacted by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and saw a sharp decline in value of around -12%.
Over recent years this market has benefitted from the increasing preference towards showering, technological developments, and the growing demand for more premium solutions.
In 2020, around 93% of UK households have at least one shower installation in their property. Around two-thirds of shower controls tend to be installed over a bath, however, a significant number of households also have a secondary separate shower facility, e.g., shower enclosure or wetroom area.
Abdul Tantouch, Market Researcher at AMA Research comments “the shower market has now reached maturity in the UK, with the significant and ongoing demand for more premium solutions.
Flexibility, convenience, and ease of use are key requirements and are influencing the shift towards higher-value products. Given the current levels of uncertainty because of the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit, durability and longevity are also important attributes.
It is increasingly important for suppliers to deliver quality and variety in their product offerings to justify homeowner investment. “
Shower Market Challenges
With the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the level of online purchases, particularly during lockdown periods.
This trend is expected to continue with the internet having raised expectations and awareness of affordable design-led products.
There is potential for the shower equipment market to rebound after mid-2021, with demand particularly emulating from homeowners that have accumulated savings over the past year.
Shower products for both the residential and commercial sectors are distributed through a wide range of channels.
The main distribution channel continues to be merchants with home improvement multiples also holding a substantial share.
Other retail channels include bathroom specialists, online retailers, retail multiples and department stores.
Manufacturers are also selling spare parts and accessories direct to the consumer online, via transactional websites.
In 2021 it is estimated that the market will decline by a further -2%, followed by more steady growth of 3-4% per annum from 2022 to 2025.
The wide availability of Covid-19 vaccines and a more certain UK economy will support confidence levels going forward, with possible pent-up demand driving sales.

Birkdale, the UK’s leading wholesale supplier of gate and fencing accessories is delighted to announce added functionality to its DuraPost® FenceBuilder App for DuraPost® Trained Installers. Through the new mobile software, DuraPost®Trained Installers can now quickly generate and send tailored fencing quotes – directly to their customers.
Over the last few years, DuraPost® By Birkdale has become widely recognised as the go-to-alternative to concrete and timber for all commercial and domestic fence installations. Now, with its enhanced DuraPost® FenceBuilder App, DuraPost® Trained Installers are able to specify the solution more easily and in a streamlined manner.
Upon signing up to the application, DuraPost® Trained Installers gain access to the simple-to-use mobile software, which enables them to instantly generate fencing quotes that can be sent on to customers via email.
DuraPost App product pages
As such, the DuraPost® FenceBuilder App modernises the fencing specification process. The application allows trade professionals to select different DuraPost® solutions to create their ideal fencing solution.
In turn, the software then creates an on-screen visualisation of the chosen products. Designed for DuraPost® Trained Installers, the innovative mobile software allows tradespeople to place their own mark-up percentages to any chosen solutions. Additionally, labour costs can also be applied through the application to ensure that all rendered quotes are accurate.
Through the application, customers and installers can decide on the appropriate building method, colour and material of their desired fencing system. Similarly, users are able to make further design choices when it comes to supporting parts and accessories, gravel board material, as well as fence and gate panel styles. Built with ease of use in mind, the mobile software follows a step-by-step process to ensure it is both simple and straightforward.
Once the solutions have been selected, the application can generate a digital quote, which can then be sent directly to customers. To provide further functionality, the system also provides DuraPost® Trained Installers with a handy calendar, which they can use to book in upcoming jobs.
By using the application, those in the trade are able to more effectively manage the creation, organisation and scheduling of forthcoming jobs, as well as being able to check the status of various ongoing projects. Additionally, DuraPost® Trained Installers are able to earn points from each DuraPost® installation, which they can later redeem for a variety of vouchers.
Ed Harvey, Group Marketing Director at Birkdale commented: “With the new DuraPost® FenceBuilder App, trade professionals are able to offer customers a modern approach to the fence specification process and can deliver even greater levels of service.
The application is very easy to use and available to download for free via the App Store and the Google Play Store. By using the enhanced application, DuraPost® Trained Installers are also able to earn points through the DuraPost® Reward Scheme. In turn, the earned points are then redeemable against a range of vouchers, which can benefit you and your business.”
As always, DuraPost® By Birkdale offers a number of important benefits for installers and customers alike. The lightweight solution is far easier to fit than concrete alternatives and can often be managed by a single fencing professional.
Additionally, the innovative galvanised steel fence post system provides long-term durable performance and is backed to deliver up to 25 years of performance. Through this time, the system will not rot, split, crack or warp and has been wind-tested to withstand winds of up to 110mph.

Travis Perkins plc, which is the UK’s largest supplier of building materials and owner of the Travis Perkins builders’ merchants, Toolstation and many specialist trade businesses, today formally announced its commitment to disability inclusion after joining The Valuable 500 last year.
Building a great place to work for people with disabilities is an integral part of the Group’s broader Equality, Diversity and Inclusion agenda, and this targeted disability inclusion commitment has been developed as part of the wider strategy to build a fully inclusive workplace for the 20,000 colleagues who work across the Group. It also extends to the Group’s customers and suppliers:
1) Build our partnership with the Business Disability Forum to become disability confident and ensuring that our colleagues, especially our leaders, have the skills and knowledge they need to be inclusive of people with disabilities.
2) Establish a colleague Ability network which brings together colleagues from across the business to give our colleagues with disabilities a stronger voice in shaping an inclusive working environment and ways of working for themselves and our customers.
3) Work together across our business to develop a consistent process for making adjustments for colleagues with disabilities and to enable them to thrive with us.
“We acknowledge that creating a more inclusive environment which celebrates and nurtures diversity will be crucial to our future success as a business and as an industry.
Signing up to The Valuable 500 initiative was an important first step for us in articulating our aspirations and putting disability on our leadership agenda.
“Today’s formal commitment will help us realise our ambition through some practical steps, so we continue to change mindsets and make our business fully accessible to colleagues with disabilities, both seen and unseen, over time.
We look forward to working with our colleagues to deliver on these objectives and to build a thriving workplace for everyone,” explained James Mackenzie, who is Managing Director for Toolstation and Ability sponsor for Travis Perkins plc.
